One day a person said – I am spiritual but not religious…he said this with a high level of superiority complex.
Another day – a person asked me – are you religious or spiritual?
…
Many of us might have observed such discussion in the professional domain where over-intellectualization has taken place and people categorize between religious / spiritual. I get many questions from students also in this matter, where such points add to already confused youth.
Is there any solution?
Yes, Samskrit and Hindi makes life easier and clears confusion.
If we see in Samskrit and Hindi the word is अध्यात्म (adhyaatm), which is connected with the word आत्म and आत्मा which we all know is part of Bhagwan / Paramaatma. Our Dharm teaches us to follow the path of Karm-Yog/Gyan-Yog/Bhakti-Yog etc which lead us to Bhagwan. So there is no difference between doing pooja of Bhagwan, doing Yog, doing Bhakti, pursuing Gyaan and fulfilling our duties by adopting karm-yog. All are same. This distinction of spirituality, worship, religion etc are only created by people to confuse youth of Bharat and deviate them from the right path. Also, the incompetency of western religions and dearth of proper vocabulary in relatively poor* english language (poverty of vocabulary) is party to this confusion. So, I personally feel, we should feel connected with all components of life as per our culture.
Keep life simple, refer to Gita Press Books for clearing such doubts in most easy manner

Good read to simulate thinking. I wasn’t aware of the difference and context of these two words.
Language does plays a strong role here and I wanted to understand through their(western philosophy) lens. One such post is below

For them spirituality means to connect at emotional level maybe and religion is more of the physical activities involved in following your belief. Hence the difference and confusion.
Western philosophy is not much deep, their focus has been largely on providing and fulfilling the basic human needs. Christian missionary may have provided school, hospitals, clothes, food and infrastructure at places where govts or other missionaries have minimal footprint. Their footprint has been increasing mostly in developing and poor countries. European and American churches have trouble keeping the followers of Christianity intact as compared to Africa or asia. European and American are rather getting attracted and curious for indian philosophies gradually. The trend is opposite in Asian countries.
