Most of you would have watched a classic – Choti si Baat. In the movie Arun (Amol Palekar) loves Prabha, but does not posses basic communication skills. So he finds Col. JNW Singh (Ashok Kumar) who could groom his personality. He gets trained, so that he could overcome Nagesh (Asrani).

Col JNW Singh gives him best training, but at the end something critical happens, when Arun was set to apply last ‘chaal’ on Prabha. Col Singh, frustrated at his foolishness, remarks – Prabha is not of that kind, she is sincere girl and already loves him. But fortunately, Arun does not go ahead with this plans and Prabha feels comfortable, as she was no more apprehensive of the chaal (of which Nagesh warned her).

This story seems is a perfect analogy to explain relationship of Researcher, Supervisor, Examiner and Researched. Just put Amol Palekar as a Researcher; Ashok Kumar as Supervisor; Asrani as Examiner; Prabha as Researched (subject).

‘Researcher’ has a personal quest for particular ‘Subject’ which he wants to pursue. But lacks basic ‘research skills’ and fears ‘examiner’. So he goes rigorous training under ‘Supervisor’ and approaches the ‘Subject’. The ‘examiner’ is also all set and ready to test him. He first explores the philosophical roots of researcher’s approach. Based on which, he pre-empts the findings of researcher and is all ready to critique the work of researcher, by saying – ‘nothing new’. Researcher was also on path of doing so, but suddenly something unusual happens and researcher listens to his ‘heart’ rather than laid down methodology and achieves something unique and precious, without invading the ‘Subject’. The researcher and researched now become one and inseparable. Best gift for ‘Supervisor’.
